Okay this is more for gamers but anyone can vote. This generation of gaming has given up some mind blowing graphics thus spoiling long time gamers with mind blowing effects.
So my question is how important are graphics to for video games?

I may be the first to go "Bah Graphics" but they do make up a important part of gaming. You could make the best game play ever, but it could be marred by bad graphics for the platform you made it for.
But I'm not sure it's should be the driving point for consoles for a while, Can we stick to a certain level of graphics for a while and allow companies to make more worthwhile games instead of keeping pace with the Graphics race and just end up focusing on the "Big Titles", which are all turning out to FPS's in the first place.

Good graphics aren't always essential, but they do indeed play an important role. In terms of what's most important in gaming, it is always the gameplay. Now, good graphics are nowhere near the most important aspect of a game, but they really are required to make a truly great game.
However, people are always going to have different views on how important of a role graphics play in video games.

Depends.
On regular games they are not important at all. Although that's not to say if I see a new game today with 2D graphics, I'll bother reading the back (lets face it, 2D graphics do not fit on say, the 360)
But on the type of games I play, Simulators, graphics are everything. Microsoft Train Simulator has bad graphics, even on the user created most routes and trains, but there are some routes out there (my local is being re-done) as well as trains that have fantastic graphics that make it more respectable.
So I'd say they are "Not Very" important, but for Simulators, they are "Very Important". I voted the latter on the poll because I play MSTS more than anyhting (just need to get myself another copy of it).

nowadays, everyone expects the graphics to be great. with our technology that we have it should look realistic. i have to say is that certain games should look realistic. For example, Call of Duty, that game should have killer graphics because that is a 'realistic' game. Its a war-type game. I'm sure there are other games out there that don't exactly fit the 'realistic' term, but you'll know what i mean by 'realistic'. I.E. Resident Evil, DMC, Need For Speed, God of War, etc. I dont' consider them the 'animated' type of games. I hope that makes sense.
Now for a animated type of game, for example, Sonic The Hedgehog, than not so much because it's more of a cartoonish type of game. We could careless about the graphics for that type of game because it looks like it should be more animated.
But to me, it all depends on the game and how i personally think. So to me, graphics do play somewhat of a role.

Graphics are an essential part of the video game experience, but to me they rank as the least important. With me, it's always gameplay and control first, then music, then story (if applicable), with general sound effects and graphics at the bottom.
