The Power Rangers have come home.

Haim Saban's newly formed Saban Brands company has re-acquired from Disney the rights to the "Power Rangers" franchise that built Saban's fortune in the mid-1990s. Saban has cut a deal with Nickelodeon for 20 new "Power Rangers" episodes, while the library of some 700 older segs will begin airing on cabler Nicktoons later this year.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it's likely that the property commanded a price tag in the nine-figure range. At the time Disney acquired "Power Rangers" along with its acquisition of Fox Family Worldwide in 2001, the franchise had grossed an astounding $5 billion in retail sales alone.

Saban Brands prexy Elie Dekel said Haim Saban approached Disney about retrieving the Power Rangers franchise more than six months ago because he was convinced it had potential for a strong revival. Disney has maintained some "Power Rangers" merchandise licensing and has episodes of the show airing around the world and on ABC Family. But the property clearly hasn't been a priority for the Mouse.

Dekel sees great promise in introducing the Power Rangers -- revolving around a group of ordinary youths who can "morph" into superheroes -- to a new generation of kids through the TV series, live touring events and feature films, among other efforts.

"Haim has always felt that the brand could truly be evergreen, and while Disney continued to produce the series and support consumer products part of the business, we still see tremendous untapped potential," Dekel said.

Dekel is very familiar with the property, having been a Saban Entertainment exec at the time it took off. Haim Saban developed the concept after being impressed by similar live-action kidvid fare he saw in Japan. He cut a deal in the late 1980s with Toei Film to develop his own spin on the genre. He pitched it to U.S. outlets for years but didn't get any takers until Fox's fledgling Fox Kids kidvid block picked it up. "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers," as the show was known in its first two seasons, was an overnight sensation after it bowed on Fox Kids in 1993.

A few years later, Saban and Fox later created a joint kidvid venture, Fox Family Worldwide, that incorporated the Power Rangers and acquired the Family Channel. Disney bought Fox Family Worldwide in 2001 and turned the cabler into ABC Family Channel.

That article you linked up (which is the same one I linked up to on Rb btw >_>) says new episodes in 2011. The first article (see first post and susiquent others) states only 20 new episodes, though.

To be honest I'm not so sure how much of a damn I give. That amy be be cause i'd heard it via text first XD...That and the fact that " 20 new episodes" seems sorta..enh. I mean if they're startin from scratch or somethin with Shinkenger or Goseiger as a base then it could lead to something new and fun. If they're picking up where RPM sadly left off with it could be something really quite interesting actually.

That being said I think RPM , at least from how it started, would have been a good way to end off the series as a whole. That being said it didn't end with the same story it started out on.

Nickelodeon has only ordered 20 episodes, which is basically the first half of the season. IF Power Rangers becomes a success again, then Nickelodeon will order the other 20 episodes/the rest of the season... So you all stop worrying about the next season only being 20 episodes long and start worrying about the show actually getting the needed ratings to get the second batch

As for that casting sheet... I've looked that thread up on RB yesterday and the guy who posted it didn't had any sources stated... Plus like Tiz said, the characters, especially Gold, sounds too much like Shinkenger... Either way, for now I'll be taking that casting sheet with a grain of salt (same goes with that title... Power Rangers: Rise of the Samurai...) till that Licensing Expo thingy shows up in June

I am relieved that it is on a cable channel again. My local ABC never played RPM and it is not and never has played the MMPR playback. I just don't understand it. I blamed it on sports/nascar but it didn't play the show when it did not have sports lined up. If any other fans ended up with this problem, there is at least part of the reason why the ratings were so low for RPM and MMPR playback.

I should also note that I would not be watching the MMPR playback anyway, the first two seasons of that season sucked but I would love to have the option to change the channel from the cheese. XD

-PR 2011 will have 40 new episodes
-Still no mention of the season's name
-Power Rangers will air 7 days a week on Nicktoons (reruns)
-Casting just beginning and production starts this fall
-They're really excited and fully behind in supporting Power Rangers.
-Mr. Dekel even promoted Power Morphicon and acknowledged that Power Rangers has adult fans.

I admit, I know little of the source footage, but from what few and far pieces I have seen (and I know I'm going to get killed for this), some of it looks a bit...daft. Especially the Gold Ranger.

Nor am I looking forward to the shinkenger adaptation, and I Loved shinkenger.Well for me, it will be a first: I have actually watched the sentai version before the American version. I am excited to see how they will change things and what will they add. I want to know if its ending will be as lacking as Shinkengers or will they shoot for the stars.

Also Goseiger made me realize that I may not be able to be satisfied with just watching the sentai version.

I just don't see how it being "saban's power rangers" again has any impact on how good it'll be. It could be complete and utter crap..which is what i beleive some people think sometimes no matter whose in charge XD

Yes it has every possibility of being crap. For me the big thing about Saban owning the franchise again is that the franchise will be "properly exploited". Which hopefully translates to a tighter focus on writing, music and other production values.

RPM was good, but ever since SPD, Disney just kept treating Power Rangers like a black sheep they just couldn't kill because of contract reasons or something. And that's I'm still stoked about this purchase of Saban's, The franchise is back in the hands of someone who at least respects the franchise, even if it's a purely business level respect.

Plus most of the fighting is always done by the Stunt crew, both morphed and unmorphed... It has been that way for years

As for working together, if they all have the correct chemistry off set, then they will easily work together... Good example being the crew of SPD, they had great chemistry off the set and it showed in the show whenever they work together...

Not to mention, this is Saban we are talking about, not Disney... So have some faith that it will be good

If anything... TEAMWORK is a lot more important when saving the world... Fighting is just one of the tools, but the reason why the Rangers always triumph over the evil forces is not because they can fight, but because they operate as a solid team, each covering up the other's weakness which makes them as a group very powerful... So saying that fighting is key in saving the world... I will have to disagree with that since Teamwork is the key to saving the world

These actors went through a hefty casting process with ton of call backs. A good chunk of the competition got cut off when the casting people imposed a contract the audtioners must sign (which will cut their pay below 700 in New Zealand dollars and they can't work for anyone else until 2012) or they can't audition any further. Even with the contracts there were still plenty of actors left. I'm sure these actors are more than capable because the casting people worked hard not only in the US, but also Australia and New Zealand, to find the right people for the job.

The original Power Rangers weren't exactly actors either when they started out. They were martial artists and gymnasts before becoming actors.

I spoke with Tony Oliver today. He's serving as a production/story consultant for the new series. Here's what he had to say:
-The cast would have some big surprises. He wouldn't say outright that there would be some familiar faces but the implication was there.<br />
-He said Japanese purists of the Japanese versions of the sentai shows will like this version. This American version will apparently stay very true to the Japanese original. I asked him to clarify this pointing out that Shinkenger is very Japanese in tone and style especially with the look of the rangers and the morphin process, he acknowledged that and said it would be faithful to the Japanese version.<br />
-Said he was honored and very happy to be called in to work on it.<br />
-We talked about the Gold Ranger and what a fun, different, and weird character he is.

Seems Tzachor really is back if they stick with the "being true to the Japanese" thing, but I'm very excited for the first point made.

For some reason, people are speculating that Bulk will be in it. While I'd love to see this, I highly doubt it.

The acting is quite sub-par from what is shown, and the ADR is horrible. I mean seriously, the acting is inconsistent with what's shown. The rangers are talking as if they were standing still, despite the fact that they're dancing around fighting multiple opponents.

Thankfully, they lost those people in robes who followed the Japanese rangers around, and took inspiration from the Japanese morph, while jazzing it up to make it look half decent. Visually, it looks gorgeous in HD, which is something RPM could've really used with. It's clear the show is on a higher budget than it was in recent years.

Overall, not too bad, although it did take me a few watches to go from "Urgh!" to "Huh".

Great clip but I must say: pink's voice acting sucks, but she'll hopefully get better overtime. Yellow wasn't that great either.
I still have high hopes for it though.
